Hocus Pocus - Halloween Party

Hocus Pocus - Halloween Party

Our family throws a family friendly Halloween party each year for our friends and neighbors. Our Halloween party evolution was in full force by 2017 when we hosted this party. Our kids and many of their friends were still young so we wanted to keep the decor festive and lighthearted with a few creepy elements that the kids could choose to do it they were up for a thrill.

The most exciting addition was "Spook Alley” (essentially a mini haunted house) in the downstairs closet and a spooky storytelling fireside area upstairs complete with a witch to read the kids ghost stories. The highlight this year for the kids (besides all you can eat candy) were the activities which included:

“Bite Me”- donuts strung on string and kids need to bite the donuts off the string without using their hands.

Spooky Feels- the classic game where kids stick their grubby mitts into different spooky containers and have to feel items like witch fingers, eyeballs, ghost poop, etc. Kids love it and its so nostalgic for the adults from their childhoods.

Mummy Wrap- We split the kids intro groups and gave each group a roll of toilet paper. They picked one lucky mummy to be wrapped up. The rules are simple, create a mummy with TP. The first team to completely use their roll won a treat!

And lastly, taking a stroll down the Spook Alley. We have a long closet under our stairs that is shaped like an “L”. we hung up muslin, webbing and spiders to give it an extra scary vibe. We placed a ringing phone (a halloween decoration from Target) that the kids were told they needed to answer. When they got to the back of the closet to pick up the phone, they saw in the “L” section of the closet a spider that jumped out at them. Lots of loud screams and fun were had!!! We have continued the tradition of the spook alley every year since.

This year Shane made a 9 foot tall skeleton for the entryway. He lit it up from the base and added a fog machine that can be controlled remotely. As the kids arrived (and on Halloween night) We set the machine off if a gust of smoke and lights. My favorite go to places to find Halloween decorations are Grandin Road, Pottery Barn Kids, Target, Michaels and Meri Meri. I have been collecting Halloween decorations for over 20 years, bins and bins worth of pure witchery and magic in the form of decor.
