Cinco de Mayo Fiesta con Zoom
Happy Cinco de Mayo! We plan to celebrate the day with tacos and Paloma cocktails.
2 oz. each of tequila, grapefruit juice & sparkling water, 1/2 oz of both fresh lime juice and simple syrup all over ice. Add salt, lime, or a grapefruit garnish.
In 2020, we were in full quarantine mode so we celebrated with a Zoom celebration…
Not being about to celebrate like we are used to is HARD! Coming together for parties or to celebrate milestones brings me so much joy. From planning and setting up the decor, to delicious food and beverages, but most of all, the sense of connection with those I am celebrating with. Right now, with everything shook up, I can’t seem to turn off desire to plan and host celebrations.
With Cinco do Mayo approaching, an occasion that I often celebrate by having a margarita or two with my girlfriends, I wanted to figure out how to make that happen in a fun, social distanced way. Also, any opportunity to make days feel novel and special for my family is a big win! My solution was to decorate in our home for a fiesta!
Without being able to pop to the party store, and delivery on non-essential goods taking forever, I had to piece together decorations from past events, made a balloon cactus and added in a few decor items from around the house, but I created a festive Cinco de Mayo tablescape.
I plan to send these brightly colored, fiesta tablescape photos to my friends with the Zoom invite, so that we can set our video backgrounds with coordinating party decor. I am planning to drop a fun pre-mixed beverage on each or their porches before we meet. This way we can sip our margaritas, munch on our chips and salsa together and maybe trick ourselves, even just for a few minutes, that we are really together sharing an experience.
If you have not had a chance to try a social Zoom call, I really encourage you to give it a try. Admittedly, at first it can feel a bit awkward, but then as the conversation gets going, and everyone shares a little, it begins to just work. For me, It truly helps to fill that need for social connection we all are hungry for right now. If you want to have a Cinco de Mayo themed event, feel free to use my photos as your background!
I loved the fun trend of making balloon cactus on Pinterest. I didn't have a lot of materials on hand so I was only able to make the one, but it was incredibly easy! I used glue dots to put the different sized balloons together and then a sharpie to create the prickly effect.
I was able to buy the collection of paper fans and banners off of Amazon. This set came with the “Fiesta” banner and another with different cactus cutouts that I opted to not use this time. I also used colorful Mexican Serape table runner and large sombrero (which has been a part of our Cinco de Mayo festivities for about 20 years).
My daughter received the Mini Llama Pianta from a birthday party she attended months ago and the Crepe Paper Flowers were left over from a previous event. I used a grey letter board to make my sign and made a pitcher of margaritas. I don’t own traditional margarita glasses, but opted for this smaller size, which is probably better for my recipe that tends to be a tad bit stiff.
Wishing you a lovely Cinco de Mayo however you plan to celebrate!
Here are the fun little packages that I dropped to some of my close neighborhood pals’ porches. Without access to the party store, I used some fruity themed party supplies that I picked up at Target. I also decided that these Paloma cocktails sounded yummy although the brand also makes a canned margarita. I made the “Mamacita needs a Margarita” tags and made some fun bags for friends.
At one point, here in Washington, we were told that this week would be an endpoint of our stay at home order. At the time I thought Cinco de Mayo would be a great opportunity to celebrate together. Now that our order has been pushed out another month, we will have to wait, but we still NEED the Margaritas!
I just love the Fruit party supplies from Target and look forward to finding another opportunity to decorate with these bright and cheery decorations!
